  1. The word latin is misused to describe people from Spanish speaking countries, because latin should refer to anyone who's language derives from the latin, as French, Romanian or Italian.including Spanish.

On the other hand hispanics is also a widely miss used term because the real hispanics are the Spanish (from Spain, Europe) There are many natives of South America who traced their roots to Spain, but mostly they are of mixed heritage, and mainly NATIVE AMERICAN.

Therefore if a person is of native American heritage he or she could not be called English, or Spanish, or hispanic. They are only Hispanic by language but not by their race, the real hispanics are caucasians, from Europe who's language is Spanish, the reason why the term hispanic is used to describe people from Latin America is because in their culture is an insult to call them indians or native American(go figure)They are from the South American continent and they should be described as South Americans, or native American, but do not use the latter term, they get offended, as you see it is a very touchy subject, The American indians from here In North America are proud of their heritage, the ones from south America are not.

  2. Hispanic= Someone who speaks Spanish (Castellano)

Latino= Someone who speaks a Latin based language (Portuguese, Romanian, Catalan, Castellano, Italian, French, etc..)

It has nothing to do with race, ethnicity, or culture.

  3. latino is a more colloquial term used to describe someone who retains spanish or south american (apart from Brazilian) culture

hispanic is more a generic term, like n!groid, caucasoid, mongoloid, etc

  4. hispanic means it still has to do with Spain and latino means that it separates it self completely from spain.

  5. A Hispanic is a person who has decendancy to the Iberian penisula and shares in culture and customs that can be traced back to the Iberian peninsula, A "Latino"  is an informal phrase used to group together all Hispanic Americans and Latin American Immigrants regardless of specific cultural background.

  6. Hispanic is a term that was popularized by the U.S. Census Bureau back in the 70's.  By definition it refers to anybody from a Spanish Speaking Background or Culture regardless of Race or National Origin.  Hispanics can be either "Native Born" Americans or descended from Latin American immigrants. The term Hispanic is pretty much an American invention and is not really used outside of the United States.

Latino refers specifically to people of Latin American descent.  And unlike Hispanic which refers only to Spanish speakers, the term "Latino" also includes Brazilians who are Portuguese speakers.

In response to Johnny 99...The common American definition of Latino has very little to do with the European group known as the Latins.  In fact most Latin Americans have very little ancestral or ethnic connection to the original Spanish and Portuguese settlers.
