Wikipedia explain adequately what defence mechanisms are below.  Freud's original manifestations (three of them) have remained relatively unchanged: denial being the strongest (an abuse victim may deny that they are being abused); displacement (yelling at your child after being abused by a spouse - you are displacing the anger to a less threatening object/person); repression (putting the actual memories into unconscious).
