The question was asking about the tone of the novel and i have that part down, but I'm not exactly sure if i understand what the second half is asking...

Does it (meaning the tone i suppose) add or detract from the characters discourse?

Can anyone explain, please and thank you.

  1. The first person had it right -

Does the tone add or detract from what the characters say?

That's still sort of a difficult question to address.

Does the tone make you trust or distrust what the characters say? Does the tone make you feel like the characters' speech has power? Or that they are unknowingly powerless? Or even knowingly powerless? Does the tone undermine the speech or does the speech undermine the tone?

I think that's still a pretty abstract question when you take the 'discourse' out of the mix... and I have a degree in English and 1984 is my favorite book!!! :)

    Good luck!

  2. Does the tone enhance or detract from what the characters say?

  3. TONE

Tone is the attitude a writer takes towards a subject or character: serious, humorous, sarcastic, ironic, satirical, tongue-in-cheek, solemn, objective. Similar to Mood

The tone set by the mayor, made the city a very tense and angry place to live and work.
