  1. There are two things happening.  First the oxygen eliminates anaerobic bacteria in favor of aerobic bacteria.  Anaerobic bacteria are more likely to produce H2S and other "stale" gases.  Also, the oxygen can turn the sulfide formed into sulfur and sulfate, which have no odor.
