  1. Great answer "mgerben"

  2. Metabolism needs fuel and oxygen. Else, the organism dies.

  3. they constantly burn energy

  4. Because they expell (use) energy all the time  to live, grow, move around, find food, eat, have s*x (this is an integral part of life).

To do all this they need energy. If they can't generate limitless amounts of energy themselves, they have to get it from somewhere.

Plants get it from the sun and store it in fat and sugars.

Animals use this energy from plants, digest it and run on the sugars and fats they get from their food.

You might as well ask: Why do cars need to be refilled all the time?  Answer: Because they use energy when they move and their tank is not infinitely large.
