  1. They ARE relevant!!  Cultures world-wide arise from the context of their various myths.

  2. It isn't irrelevant, the same truths hold in this age, just as they did then.

  3. You have to specify to what or which reader. Af far as i know more people are interested about it today than 100 or 200 years ago. It is part of our everyday lives. Look how many blogs or articles you can find on mythic subjects. Even in yahoo answers. People want to  know more about history and culture than they used to. Authors use it on their books. Think of "The Iliad" "Odyssey" "Queen of the damned" or "Hades Daughter" "Harry Potter" "The Lord of te ring" "Wizards first rule" and a lot of others. Authors use it and people investigate it, blog it, post it. We have watched it on TV in movies like "the clash of the titans" and "troy". Maybe people in your circle of friends may not care much for mythology. But a lot of people do like reading and enjoying it. Perhaps your question should have been, why isn't mythology applicable in present times? Or why is it that people don't believe in mythical characters the way they do with the religious characters.
