    1)  They are useful for dating of fossils.  (e.g., carbon dating).

    2)  They can be used to "label" compounds to aid in learning how physiological processes (like photosynthesis and cellular respiration) work.

    3)  They can be used to "tag" certain parts of a cell to help visualise and locate cellular processes.
