  1. Because they gather up everything they take out of the water, and need to be washed and sanitized or replaced.


  2. Washing, dewatering and compaction of the screenings is important for several reasons:

        * Prevention of odor nuisance

        * Prevention of diseases

        * Reduction of volume, weight and disposal costs

        * Return of degradable BOD into the wastewater flow to improve denitrification processes

  4. Are you talking about the physical screens that help filter out unwanted solids in the waste water treatment plants?  It's a *MUST-DO* to maintain the efficiency of the purity of the treated water to be released back into normal clean water streams, rivers and lakes.

  6. Because they screen out all the impurities in the water and eventually get clogged with everything people put down the drain . . . waste, acids, grease, etc.
