  1. Other than that the preponderance of the world's arable land is there?  That is the major factor.  I hope you meant temperate regions.

Those are the areas with fertile soil and rainfall.  Look at the usable areas of just the U.S., Canada and Russia.  Polar regions have nowhere to grow anything that is ever thawed.  Equatorial regions are either jungle (Amazon) or desert (Sahara), so that leaves the temperate zones.

  2. The preponderance of agriculture production occurs in temperate regions because extremes in temperature are not ideal for crops.  The extreme heat or extreme cold (frost) kills except for the hardy permanent plants.

I live in California, the greatest agricultural land on the planet and a mixture of temperate and some occasional extremes in temperature in the central valley.

  3. From a statistical point of view looking at import and export figures it may seem that way. Most of the land mass is in the north on the planet. The majority, by far, of large unified countries are in the temperate northern areas. That would give the impression by looking at statistics that these areas lead in production. Many, if not most, tropical and sub tropical regions have agriculture that seems to be more specialized products if they are exports, but predominately are subsistence farms in the "third world". This is also the region where most of the planets deserts are found. Given that this belt has a wet or dry season pattern as opposed to a cold or hot season, the topography determines rain, and areas are either deserts or have long periods of heavy rain not conducive to farming with the exception of rice.

So, in short, the temperate regions seem more productive as such a great percentage of land under the control of large, well off countries is statistically more productive in terms of imports and exports. The fact is, more land is probably under cultivation at different levels (subsistence farming and local only farming) in non temperate areas than is reflected statistically. Very little land is left unused.

  4. Do you mean temperate? If so, then I would think it's because that's where plants are able to grow. Same reason the preponderance of oil drilling is done in regions that contain oil.

  5. Duh...plants need sunshine to grow. More sun more plants and more biodiversity. Warm weather and plants go together.
