Explaining the existance of alcoholism in today's society using the functionalist theory?

how would we explain it using the functionalist theory? P.S to those who dont know:

Functionalist perspectives are based on the assumption that society is a stable,orderly system. The stable system is characterized by societal consensus. This means that the majority of members share a common set of beliefs, values, and behavioural expectations.

  1. i dont think your very clear on what the theory actually says. a functionalist theorist would say that alcoholism is needed in society.  it is there because it has to be. it is needed for society to function. if it did not exist then counselors who work doing this would not have a job and so on..it is needed, has a purpose and you can not prevent it.
