  1. Nope..naming a rose or explaining its botany does not change its beauty.

Explanations in art are for the insecure... people who trust their own taste don't require them and those who need them don't really "get" the piece anyway.

  2. I dunno about kill, but it's not necessary.

Art is supposed to make you think and should ideally be open to others' interpretation. If you have to explain what you're trying to express, then you're not expressing it succinctly in your work.

  3. art is very personal and everyone looks through different eyes but sometimes explanations are helpful. I recently learned that you could determine Van Goghs moods by his paintings. I saw one of his pictures I thought was still pretty dark but he did use a few bright colors. That was one of his good moods and then I was shown one of his depressive mood paintings and there is a difference I had not noticed before. I guess I never paid that much attention because I'm more of a realist instead of an impressionist. Therefore explanation does not kill art and can sometimes help you view things differently and with an open mind. Art is supposed to be about having an open mind.

I do very much agree with Jenny.

  4. Perhaps the piece of work was inspired by something or someone. The background might add some relevance to the piece.
