Question:

Explanation of this quote from Romeo and Juliet?

Come, gentle night, — come, loving black brow'd night,

Give me my Romeo; and when he shall die,

Take him and cut him out in little stars,

And he will make the face of Heaven so fine

That all the world will be in love with night,

And pay no worship to the garish sun.

I'm thinking of sending it to my boyfriend, whose nickname is Romeo, but I want to make sure of what it means first. Any help would be greatly appreciated!

  1. Prefer if you use another poem, because this one is tragic and you want your boyfriend to get uplifting poems.

  2. What Epo and Nak said.  Thanks for writing it out - it is a beautiful passage.  And I must disagree with that guy who said not to use it - I've never heard a more loving and complimentary thing said about someone else as that passage.

  3. Juliet is wishing it would be night, because Romeo is going to come to her at night (it will be their wedding night), and she can't wait to see him.

The part at the end, she's basically saying he's hot.  He's so hot, that if you cut him up into stars, they'd be so gorgeous that everyone would prefer the night to the day, because the Romeo stars would be so beautiful that the sunshine would seem ugly.

  4. ok go to

    sparknotes.com

it has romeo and juliet translated to plain english!!!!

it had act and scenes all of it

just find what page that quote is and look it up in sparknotes.com

    hola!

  5. OMG i studied Romeo & Juliet last semester. So here goes:

Juliet is wanting night to come, to see Romeo and for them to be wed.

The end is all complements. Saying Romeo is absolutely gorgeous, stating if you cut him up into stars he would be so fine that everyone would prefer night than day. The sun would not be as grand and wonderful as the beautiful night made from the stars of Romeo.

    Hope it helps! xoxo
