would anyone agree that a four year old with speech difficulties and possible autism in a mild form who is interested in cutting things up, moving lines of cars forward and back, skittles, fiddling with the taps in the toilet, flying cars/aeroplanes and rockets and making them crash has a trajectory schema? if you do agree, and have knowledge in this area, can you suggest how i can best help facilitate his learning using his schema?

I am a childminder who looks after him in the afternoons.

many thanks for your help.

  1. Well diagnosed it does seem as if he is displaying a trajectory schema and possibly alongside a transportation schema. Continue to let him do the things he likes to do and encourage these patterns of play in other areas, for instance line up articles outdoors and see what he does with them, give him some beanbags and buckets and allow him to experiment with arrangements and throwing the bags into the buckets. Keep him involved in the used of scissors by making collages with him with the materials he cuts up. Allow him to throw things like soft toys through hoops and ask him to help you put the shopping into the trolley when you go shopping together, although be careful with the eggs!! Good luck and enjoy.
