Question:

Extended Stay in Scotland?

What are my best options for an extended stay in Scotland?

The travel plans are still in the "research" phase, but I am contemplating staying for a minimum of 6 months. I'm very open to recommendations for staying in a particular part of the country, as well.

(FWIW, I would be coming from the States)

  1. I can't tell you anything about visa's or stuff like that, but right now the UK isn't a cheap place to stay. Don't be put off by that tho, Scotland is a beautiful country.

I don't know what you plan on doing while your here, if its work or pleasure, but i would recomend living centrally, Glasgow or maybe a town like Ayr, both on the west coast, with great rail links, up and down the country. Also easy access for a visit to Ireland.

It can be cold and wet in the winter, best maybe to come over April, the weather starts to get a little better. Although on a cold winters morning the place is just as sceninc. Don't expect a suntan tho, lol.

I hope you come over and enjoy your stay, we're a freindly bunch, like a laugh.

  2. can't make recommendations on where to stay because I haven't a clue what sort of places you like ... the central part Glasgow-Edinburgh is where most people live, but it might be cheaper and more interesting (more authentically Scottish) to stay in a smaller town not in the central belt

for accommodation either see if you can get a flat share or become someone's "lodger", i.e. living "en famille" in someone's spare bedroom, on a long term basis which could be self-catering
