Getting ready to purchase a new 52' Samsung LCD 650 series, they want $400 for 5 years warranty. If they have to service more than 3 times they replace it etc. Its hard to justify a quarter of the cost of the tv to warranty, any thoughts?

  1. Consumer New Zealand suggests that you should not be misled about purchasing extended warranties. Your TV, even if it comes with, let's say, a three year warranty, should still give you a good seven to ten years. A TV should not break within its useful life (7-10 years) and any faults, as long as they are not caused by you or anyone else, should be repaired in the appropriate manner, for free, or at a lower price.

The only reason you should purchase an extended warranty is if you are going to be using it for commercial purposes.

  2. Consumer Reports recommends against getting an extended warranty, but does suggest putting it on your Visa or M/C (if your card has the coverage - Gold and Platinum cards, I believe) to get a one year extension without incurring additional cost.
