Extension of the US Open receives criticism from ATP – Tennis News
Association of Tennis Professionals (ATP) recently objected on the extension the US Open Grand Slam Championships 2013 by one more day. However, the verdict announced by the governing body received a great deal of disapproval,
as they considered it not very viable.
The tournaments spokes person told the media in an interview, “By modifying the schedule to allow a rest day between the semi-finals and the final, the U.S. Open has recognized the incredible physical demands of men's tennis. However,
the ATP and its players have made it clear to the U.S. Open that we do not support a Monday Final. We strongly believe the US Open should keep a similar schedule to the other Grand Slams. It is unfortunate the US Open response did not reflect our views on
this issue and the ATP and its players will continue to pursue this matter in its discussions with the USTA.”
At the Flushing Meadows, the women’s semi-finals will be held on Friday and the final round will take place on Sunday. The officials removed the Super Saturday, which is taking place since 30 years on stretch. The key reason to
take the decision is in reference to bad weather and the delayed final matches.
On the other hand, there is a considerable increase in the prize money of the US Open by $ 4 million; this is the greatest raise in the award since the year 1990. In the past, the dissatisfied tennis professionals have complained
about the finances. The players have stated that the money award is far less than the revenue generated through ticketing and sponsorships, as this is unfair with the top seeded players to progress to the ending rounds.
In the earlier past, the match between Andy Murray and the Serbian number one, Djokovic, was rescheduled to Monday, due to unbearable down pour at the Flushing Meadows. This practise is done for the last five years now. The decision
for the extension is not final yet and is subject to debate by the ATP team. However, there is a considerably lesser chance that they will amend the decision regarding Monday’s extension.
