Question:

Exterior House Painters?

We're getting our house painted on Monday & my husband & I will be away at work all day. The painters said they won't be finished for a week or two. I REALLY don't want to give them a key to our house, because why would they need to go in anyway other than to use the bathroom. Does anyone know if it's required to give them a key?

I know this sounds like a stupid question but this is our first home & we've very new to everything.

  1. You shouldn't have to. They may need to get in to remove screens and storm windows (if you have them) but otherwise should be fine.

  2. No they don't need a key. If they do the job write it will take two weeks.Maybe longer. If they spray the house ask how many coats there going to put on.Then ask for a warranty on the job.The paint comes with 10 to 15 year warranty. If the wont warranty there work for 10 years get a new painter.

  3. no absolutely not if they need to use the rest room let them go to the gas station . when I'm working on the outside I would never dream of asking the home owner for a key when there away . if there working on the inside that could be a different story depending on how comfortable you feel about them as a rule my customers/clients feel very comfortable with me but there again I only leave what I came with some are not so honest

  4. A week or 2 sounds fairly long unless they have a lot of prep work(scrapeing/sanding/filling/etc) If they spray it shouldn't take more that 2 days to spray and cut in on a 4000 sq ft all wood house). They want inside to cool off/make drinks/have lunch ,watch tv,etc. If you have a safe its no big deal.
