Question:

External Hard Drive Problem After FreeNAS Modification. HELP PLEASE!!?

I was trying to set up an NAS server using my old computer with the FreeNAS. I followed the procedure on the website and got to the WebGUI, I "add disk" my external hard drive, hoping that I could access the files inside remotely. However, the next step in the procedure is to format the drive. I backed off because I have sooo many valuable files in the drive. So I deleted the drive from the "add disk" section and detached my drive. But when I load the files in the drive from other computer, all the files become inaccessible: "L:\"weird name" is not accessible. The filename, directory name, or volume label syntax is incorrect. Does anyone know what happen?!?! Are there any ways to fix this? Any help will be appreciated greatly! Thank you

(The "add disk" section is 4.3.1)

  1. Looks like you forgot to change the "Preformatted FS" option at step 4.3.1.

However, it doesn't seem like your disk should have been changed, so there's no telling what may have happened to it.

You might try recovering the drive with a tool that tries to recover the partition table.  But if that doesn't work, you may need to get something like Ontrack Easy Recovery Pro to do the job.
