Question:

External Hard Drive Problem (can see files but cant do anything to them)?

I have a WD external hard drive and it has been working fine for a month or so but just recently hasn't been working. I plug the hard drive in and it comes up with the usual auto play prompt and I can go through all the folders and view the files but I cant open any files or transfer them. If i try to transfer them to my internal hard drive it comes up with the box saying they are being transferd but it never gets anywhere and when I try to cancel it says not responding so then I click close the program and it goes to a blank desktop (no shortcuts, no toolbar, just my wallpaper). I then switch my external off and all the icons and the toolbar reappear. I have tried a system restore, thinking it may have been the recently installed windows updates that are causing the problem but no luck

Any ideas?
