External Hard Drives?

I'm thinking of buying an external hard drive..

But will I be able to install games, software, etc to it?

And will they run as fast as if they were on an internal one?

Was thinking of buying a flash drive coz I mostly wanna use it for music, but would be nice having the games on there too..

Thanks

  1. i use a 1TB ext hdd with no problem. The real choice you would have to make is if its going to be a SATA drive or an USB. USB is much slower than SATA or Firewire. although USB is more common than SATA/Firewire. I Suggest FIREWIRE/SATA for playing off of the Ext. HDD, for just storage, USB.

  2. You could install games, or anything else on it.  You may lose some speed compared to internal but as long as it is USB 2.0 or Firewire (IEEE 1394) it shouldn't be too bad.

You know internal is easy and cheaper right?

  3. But will I be able to install games, software, etc to it? yes you can.

And will they run as fast as if they were on an internal one?  no not quite they run a little slower but not a lot it depends on the one you get usb is slower by a more than a fire wire one.

i have got a 500GB exterenal maxtor one touch (just plug in and go) they are like a GIANT flash drive. just check this out http://www.maxtor.com/en/index.html they are the cheapest but yet still very good most of them come with a lifetime warranty.

  4. I'm pretty sure you will not be able to run software on it, as that needs to be run off the hard drive. But you will be able to put pictures, documents, that sort of stuff onto it. But any programs, stuff like that should only be run off the computer.

  5. Hi Stephen

You have to install from the C drive. When it asks you where you want to install it, then you can install anywhere you want because the Install shield will write the correct entry in the registry file to reflect that external drive.

I doubt it will be slower especially if the external drive runs at 7200 rpm
