Does anyone know what a good brand for an external hard-drive is? Is western digital good? I am looking for a 250gb external hard-drive up to $100.

  1. The brand isn't really the issue the most important things to look for are speed and then GBs. 7500 is the best speed and u can decide how much u want it to hold. they have ones that hold 500gbs even a terabite. I found one for $93 here http://www.buy.com/search/q/querytype/ho...

  2. Yeah western digital is quite good, so is LACIE.

  3. western digital or seagate would be your best options

  4. Harddrives are like tires. It's not a question of if one will fail, but when. Like a tire, a hardrive being used will eventually wear out.

Now some harddrive mfgs have better success than some, but they typically go in a cycle. One year Western Digital will be golden and the next they have a run of bad drives...

That said, WD tend to have less bad runs than others. If you plan to use this as backup the best advice I can give is to copy what you need to it then unplug it and store it till you need to add more data or you need to get the data. Do not leave it running,..you wouldn't leave your car running for hours on end...

  5. For a good sized, high speed, unit reasonable priced I recommend:

Western Digital Elements 500GB 3.5" External Hard Drive

USB 2.0    7200 RPM     8MB Cache   for 90$ plus free shipping

  6. I just bought a 500gb Maxtor from Walmart. It was only $98!

I'd go with that. You get much more for your money.

Do shop around though... places like Best Buy usually do not have the "best buy"

    Good Luck!

  7. Get a toshiba hard drive.

  8. The hard disks inside are all good brands; no surprise when only six or seven companies made SATA 3.5" units. The problem is, some of the cheaper mystery brand have poor cooling that imperils the hard disk, while others use shoddy drive interfaces that have a way of failing. A Western Digital should be fine. I've never owned their externals, but have used drives of theirs going back to a 40MB stepper. Good stuff, and after Seagate's recent quality slip, perhaps the best in the industry at the moment.

For your money, you're probably looking at a minimum of 500 gigabytes such as this. I'm not even sure WD still makes externals under 500GB in a 3.5" format:
