External Harddrive: delete files but it shows it's still there?

Question

I use my external harddrive to back up my iTunes music (which is like 5 g.). My EH said it had 32 G of free space. After I deleted the itunes music, it said my EH still had 32 G of free space, not 27 G.

The deleted file didn't show in my Recycling Bin. I unplugged the EH and plugged it back in. Still same thing. I restarted the comp, still the same thing.

What is going on?

Where is this 27GB coming from?

If you deleted 5GB off your external hard drive, the amount of free space will not decrease from 32GB to 27GB, it would increase from 32GB to 37GB.

If you started with 27GB, and now it's 32GB, wouldn't that be what you wanted?

If  theres nothing on it you want , Format it.
