External hard drive how to use?

i had an internal hard drive 300 gb 3 5"

i bought and ide to sata thingy. its also had a power plug. i put all the wires. the hard drive starts running (a sound) but the computer wont detect it neither does the ps3. what do i do? are there any special sotwares?

You need to install a driver for the SATA card  and the enclosure   . open the  install new hardware wizard and see if it can find it. if not put in the CD that came with it and explore it to find the driver. After the enlosure is installed it will see the hard drive and install it automatically. then you just format it.

did it come with a USB plug?

if so then try using that

i dont recall any external hard drives that need to be plugged in internally
