i'm trying to play a game online with another person, and am getting a message warning me that i may have trouble hosting games because my internal ip and external ip are different. what exactly does that mean, and how can i fix it? could it have anything to do with running an ip blocker?

  1. Your public IP is issued by your ISP from dhcp, and you can not change it. It is dynamic, so may change itself sometimes. Your internal (private) IP address MUST NOT be in a public IP range. You will ALWAYS have different external and internal addresses on a router connection. NEVER set a pc into the dmz. Find  out which ports you require for the game and set them forwarded to your internal machine.

  2. It probably means that you are connecting to the internet via a router. When you connect computers to a router, it gives each PC an "internal" ip address to which it sends the data corresponding to each. But when the router connects to the internet, it uses another ip address which is called the "external" ip. This may cause problems for hosting games or downloading p2p data, etc. Try plugging in direcly from your modem (or whatever you use to connect to the internet). Otherwise you might want to check your firewall settings to see if Windows is not blocking the games you want to play online.

If you still get trouble, or cannot bypass the router (because others wont get internet connection), do some reasearch on ip forwarding, I think that could solve your problem.

  3. If you have a router, go to it's setup page and place you PC in the DMZ Zone.  It will expose your PC to the net while playing your game.  After playing disable the DMZ setting
