External goals are things others will notice. Internal goals others may not notice.

External goals - Job promotion, buying a new car, landscaping around the house.

Internal goals - Renewing friendships, changing bad behavior, reading books and going to museums to become more cultured and knowledgeable.

Internal / External Combo goals - Getting in great shape. Taking a public speaking class.
