Extra Skin..:S?

Question

My horse had this major cut, and now he has this lump of extra skin that he grew to cover his cut.

Someone told me what this was called but I have completely forgotton...

Also I have been told that I can get some cream that will kinda get rid of this skin..

Anyone heard of these.. any names??

Proud flesh. My vet said just to use plain old Wonder Dust, but I didn't have much luck with it. He also had some expensive stuff he made up himself.... you could probably just call your vet and ask what he recommends, since he probably treated the cut in the first place.

It's called proud flesh. It is very vascular (lots of blood flow) but has no nerves. It grows very quickly. Often, if it gets out of hand, the vet will have to cut it off. It looks worse than it is because they will bleed a ton, but they can't feel it (no nerves in the proud flesh). It is most commonly seen on leg wounds but it can occur on other wounds. My favorite product for proud flesh is an herbal antiseptic spray called Schreiners. It prevents, as well as gets rid of, proud flesh. I have had a lot of luck with it on my mare - she had several old injuries with proud flesh when I got her. Now, you can hardly see the scars.

If it's been there awhile the vet may have to remove it.  Most of the products out there are meant to prevent it from forming...I'm not sure if anything can really get rid of it once it is well established.

If what you are describing is a proud flesh bulge then you really must get a vet to scrape or trim it back to allow the skin to grow normally over the wound. And there is a product called Equaide that works very well to help eliminate proud flesh if it is not too badly bulged and it will prevent proud flesh from growing and promote healthy wound healing.

The extra skin is called proud flesh

Look in any hose supply catalog they will have stuff that can be used to remove it.

Or have the vet remove it some time when he is out.

If you treat the wounds with the creams or powder while they are healing it can help to prevent proud flesh from forming.

carmarose i think is the name of the cream... i dnt no whether this is spelt right, but my friends horse had extra skin on his eye where flies had bitten him and it cleared right up
