I have bought a chimney hood waiting for it to be delivered. I want to know what it the general rule of thumb as to how high it should be above the top of the cooker? I did once see on a DIY program but forgot how many cms or inches it was.

thanks

Oh its a 60cm one if that makes any difference at all!

  1. As said above it will say the min distance in the instructions but I think you will find it's about ( top of hob-bottom of hood ) 650mm for electric & 750mm for gas

  2. It will tell you the minimum in the instructions.

Lower = better at collecting fumes

higher = better for not hitting your head on it

edit: as Firespar says the minimum seems to be

650 for electric and 750 for gas ( but this could depend on the materials yours is made from ) so still read the instructions

  3. The reason for the height of a cooker hood above a hob is not because> Lower= is better at collecting fumes,Higher= better for not hitting your head or is it anything to do with the construction ( 99.9% of all the chimney cooker hoods that I've installed have been made of stainless steel, which except for the filters & fan blade are not combustible ) The reason for 650mm high for an electric hob is heat/flames damage to the hood & 750mm for a gas hob is same as the electric hob with the exception. The extra hight is needed so the air movement           will not affect the correct combustion of the gas. (and NOT as Lucky Ellie states )
