Question:

Extreme Heat Tolerant Plants?

I have a certain spot in my backyard that takes EXTREME sun and heat. I have had a pumpkin and a sunflower wilt over, lose all crispness of the leaves, and die. First of all, I want to know why that crispness of the leaves goes away if it isn't from extreme heat, and I also want to know what kind of plants that are nice could take that kind of heat. I am a zone 8 area. Thank you so much.

  1. Well I think "Ice Plants" would be good for you, they are a type of succulent, they are drought resistant, and grow pretty flowers occasionally, and can be used as ground cover too.  You can also look up other plants by googling "drought resistant plants" and also "Xeriscape", which is conservation of water with drought resistant plants. I chose this because of all the sun you said you get, so I hope it helps some!  :)

  2. A newly transplanted takes much more water than existing plants.  Try Oleanders, but you must water every day for a while, then it does not take so much water after that.

  3. I ve got your answer  Cat-us !!!! I know when you here that you are like yuk. There are so many types of Cat us plants that are beautiful and Unique. They also use very little water. Last for ever. Another one is Elephant Ears they grow so huge.Consider this I ve got several plants and feel like a expert. I get complements from my neighbors on my garden all the time any more questions w/b or e-mail.bye

  4. The issue is more about the sun than the heat. If your spot has 8+ hours of direct sun, one thing you can do is grasses: corn if you want garden produce, ornamentals (pampas, etc) if you want growing interest.

It's also about humidity. Consult your local garden center. The staff at Lowe's is usually well-informed, and if you've got an independent, they will know a great deal.

  5. varieties of rosemary + they can be used for cooking and smell great.

  6. High Country Gardens is a Xericscaping nursery. They specialize in Xeric plants, and not all of them are CACTUS.There are really beautiful flowers that will attract butterflies and hummingbirds. I believe it is out of New Mexico, so all the plants are for hot areas, with little rainfall, and some cold winters. Here is the website.
