Extreme Sailing World Series 2011 Act 3 starts in Istanbul on Wednesday – Sailing News
After a successful completion of Act 2 at Fushan Bay in Qingdao, the Act 3 of the Extreme Sailing World Series 2011 has reached the shores of Turkey as the event is starting at the Bosphorus in Istanbul
on Wednesday, May 25. The event will be open for public on Friday, May 27.
The event will feature 11 top sailing teams of the world having 44 best sailors from around the world to be a part of the action-packed racing experience, with six races each day as the teams battle
for the glory.
This year’s hot favourite, Red Bull Extreme Sailing team will be led by two-time Olympic champions, Hans Peter Steinacher and Roman Hagara and they will definitely be looking for a top spot in the
third Act of the Extreme 40 sailing fleet event.
The Red Bull Extreme Sailing skipper, Hagara, spoke to the media about the challenges they might face during the event, “It’s going to be a really difficult challenge. And not only because of the
high level of the competition.”
He added, “It’s a tricky city venue with a lot of tall buildings that will have an influence on the winds. We were on the podium in Muscat and were close to winning in Qingdao. But after we capsized
it took us too long to get back to full speed. We’re well prepared for Istanbul.”
Red Bull Extreme Sailing will be challenged by the top sailing syndicates from Asia, Europe and New Zealand. The race can be tricky since the top buildings around the sea can cause a big difference
in the direction and the speed of the wind.
Craig Monk, the Red Bull Bowman, praised his skipper, Hagara, and hopes for positive results under his leadership, “Roman is the perfect skipper on board. He directs us well and the tactical skills
of Hans Peter are impressive. It’s only a question of time before we get our first event victory.”
The organisers are expecting approximately 40,000 viewers for the matches on the shore of Istanbul with millions watching on T.V as the Turkish television will be televising all the racing action
live on Saturday and Sunday.
