Extreme behavior change in cockatiel!!! Help?

I have a 5 year old normal gray cockatiel. Her name is Gabi.

The past 3 days she has had an absolute change in personality.

She does this strange thing where she sits on her perch, droops her wings and tail, her eyes get really big and she makes a strange, pathetic and high pitched whining noise.

She will do this until I look or speak at her, when I do, she becomes EXTREMELY aggressive, and actually starts throwing herself against the cage birds, flogging and hissing toward me. If I move toward the cage, she will become extremely agitated and actually try to attack my hand if I get it close enough.

Also, she has been aggressively guarding one corner of her cage. She will sit in the corner of the cage with her tail up, fanned out, and if anyone approaches her she will hiss and attempt to attack the person.

What is wrong with this bird!?

  1. It's mating season and she's hormonal.  Even if she doesn't have a nest, she's protecting it.  She might even lay eggs soon (she doesn't need a mate to lay, only for them to be fertile).

You can try giving her less daylight hours for now, by covering her cage earlier than you usually do, and uncovering it later.  Her body *might* be convinced it's winter and she'll go back to being her loving self.

  2. It is birdie PMS.

  3. it sounds like she wants to lay eggs and yes the poops will get bigger dose she will also look bigger in the middle a bit keep a eye on her and give her a cuddle bone to chew on if you dont already have one in the cage.

  4. It might have an affect on the size of her poops.  If she's protecting one corner of her cage she probably has eggs.  She's also probably cranky from having eggs.  Just give her some space and see what happens.

  5. I have a Senegal Parrot, she did what your bird is doing.A few days later, she had laid 3 eggs.
