We have 4 chickens in a chicken coup, with a small run out in the garden. Recently we have noticed a HUGE infestation of what appears to be brown lice. Have liced the coup many times and changed the hay yet the problem pursists to exhasibate. it has gotten so bad they are even on the bin which we have put the hay in. what we would like to know is, is there anyway we can rid the coup of these in the easiest way possibel, Do they cause any harm to the chickens? are they considered a health threat? are the eggs still safe to eat? any answers to the following questions would be greatly appreciated. we live in the uk if that helps to identify species. Many thanks.

  1. Hi,

This is a massive case of red mite, you must spray Today!

Red mite live in poultry houses, in very small cracks and are hard to find. Spray every day for at least 1 week, if they are still there keep spraying.

Red mite attack chickens during the night and suck the blood, only when full will they go away and hide.

You will notice a rapid decline in egg production very soon, if this is not acted upon very quickly, your birds will die soon.
