Question:

Extreme pain nursing BUT........?

My youngest son is 10 months old and I still nurse him. For the past few days, it has been extremely painful to nurse him on my right breast, kinda like when you first start nursing an infant. It doesn't hurt at all on my left. He is teething, but he doesn't bite or use his teeth at all while nursing. I don't see any blisters, but it's just very red and painful. Is there an explanation for this?

  1. It may be thrush. Does he have any white patches on his tongue or cheeks? Keep an eye on it - the pain you are feeling can get way worse (sometimes described as ice pick in the breast pain) if you don't treat it.

  2. you may have an infection (mastitis). i had this and it was very painful and red and hot to the touch. they didn't give me any medication, but i had to drain that side and throw the milk out. now i don't think they say you have to throw it out. after that it didn't hurt so much.

  3. you need that stuff they put on cows when they milk them they sell it at rite aid in the baby ale i think, ask the pharmists

  4. I know this sounds odd, and people are going to say "Gross!", but taste the milk from your right breast. I don't mean a big gulp or anything- a drop will do. Mastitis (a breast infection) causes an increase in sodium in your breastmilk. Seriously, you'll notice the saltiness in one drop of milk if that is what you have. If so, call your Dr. for treatment.

  5. I dont know but I just want you to know thank you!

I want to breast feed my bub when born and plan on doing for as long as possible.

Most people I know nursed for a few weeks and then stopped. It really does help me knowing people nurse for longer.

    Good luck.
