  1. 1: In New England, religion had a much stronger role in influencing government than in the middle colonies. That's because...

    2: New England was founded more by religious escapees, people who wanted to flee England in order to practice their own brand of Christianity without being persecuted. The Middle Colonies were more a sort of economic venture.

    3: ... To be honest, I've no idea.

  3. All the colonies, as far as I know, had official churches, after the model of the Church of England being the official established church of Britain.

    The most important difference is that Virginia, at least, I'm not sure about the other mid-Atlantics- shared the Anglican Church as the official church.  New England colonies had been founded by dissenters, Pilgrims, Puritans, Baptists, etc., andso were less attached spiritually to the mother country.

    This relates directly to your second q., the New England and northern colonies were founded by religious refugees, who had been persecuted for their faith in England, and wanted someplace where they could be free to have their own churches.

    The mid and more southern colonies were generally founded by businessmen--they were commercial ventures, top to bottom.  But because there was no significant religious issue with Britain, the mid/southern colonies tended also to be more loyal -or docile, if you prefer.  New Englanders were destined to be troublemakers!

    The bumpersticker--northerners came for freedom, southerners came for money.  At least that's how we teach it here in Massachusetts ;-}
