  1. First, if you're talking about living off grid and being self-sufficient, I don't think I'd call that an extremist life style.  There are plenty of people in the US that do this quite successfully.  And, I guess it depends on what YOU consider to be "society's burden."

If you want some good inspiration, read "Better Off: Flipping the Switch on Technology" by Eric Brende.  I recently finished reading it, and found it to be quite enlightening.  In it, a man and his wife challenge themselves to live for 18 months without modern conveniences.  He documents how moving to their new Amish-like farming community has affected their social as well as work lives.

And, you don't really need to go to the country or the wilderness to live off grid and in balance with nature.  Check out Path To Freedom, a fully functioning off-grid organic farm, right in the middle of Pasadena, CA.

Explore books on living off grid, living in the wild, and wilderness survival.  Spend time learning everything you can.  There's nothing extreme about wanting to know these things.  After all, this is really how people lived not all that long ago.  There are even camps and learning centers where you can train.

  2. Don't pull a Chris McCandless, dude.

  3. I hope you're not referring to "Into The Wild," because the boy died at the end, not because he was an extremist, but because he was suicidally confused and kind of stupid. There are plenty of people who have chosen to leave so-called civilization and live off the land who survived and thrived. More so in America's past, but there are still opportunities today to leave it all behind.
