How many metres away from an eye chart (when getting eyes tested) do you have to be???

  1. How well you can see is almost always calibrated to a chart at 6 meters. Usually the chart will be above your head, (so the examiner can point at what they want you to look at !) and you look at it through a mirror which is 3m away ( ie 3m to the mirror and 3m back to the chart = 6m). Anything any closer is not really distance vision, but your examiner will be able to calculate the adjustment necessary to your prescription if they are using a different distance.

    If youre just testing yourself with a chart, look at the fractions denoting each line. if the top number is 6 or 20 the distance is 6meters. if it's 3 or 10 = 3 meters. If its a decimal ie 0.1, 6m.

    it depends on how large the chart is. They are different to fit the size of room that you a re tested in
