  1. Optometrists are primary health care specialists trained to examine the eyes to detect defects in vision, signs of injury, ocular diseases or abnormality.  They can prescribe glasses, but they can not perform the treatments that an ophthalmologist (physician/surgeon) can perform.

An opthalmologist is a is a physician/surgeon who specializes in the medical and surgical care of the eyes and visual system.  Opthalmologist is an MD.

  2. Optometrists are O.D., which stands for Doctor of Optometry.

  3. An ophthalmologist is an MD.  and in most cases surgeon too  They deal with serious eye disease and trauma  where as a OD or optometrist does mainly refractions.

  4. An optometrist is an O.D.  I believe an ophthalmologist is an M.D.
