Eye Floaters...Please Help ?

I'm only 14 years old and I have been seeing many eye floaters for a few years. I only see them in my left field of view. I'm very concerned because I did some research and found that It is very uncommon for people under the age of 16 to have floaters. They are extremely annoying and get in the way of everyday life. I'm just looking for information and/or advice. Thanks.

  1. If you have done research, then you likely know the origin of floaters. I won't bore you with that.

It is uncommon for someone as young as yourself to experience these, but don't worry just yet. Having experienced them for a long period of time without substantial vision loss is actually a good sign. It generally indicates that there is not an emergent situation.

That said, you absolutely need to have a complete dilated retinal exam to rule out retinal tears/detachment. If you come out of the exam with no worries, you need to monitor your ocular health yearly with complete exams to ensure nothing visually threatening occurs.

Even better, if you can find an optometrist (no, you don't need an ophthalmologist or specialist at this point) who offers a retinal scan called the Optos or Optomap - do it! This is a great piece of technology which allows for complete viewing of the retinal structures as well as a great baseline to which future exams can be compared.

Have your parents get you in soon for a COMPLETE exam, and don't settle for the bargain basement special. Your eyes are too precious.

  2.   What you need to do is buy a Visine like substance that serve as a rinse and hopefully it washes out...

If not, then you will need to schedule an appointment with your eye doctor and he can advise you on other solutions.

      Hope you get better!
