Question:

Eye colour?

My eyes are dark brown and I was wondering whether I was a BB or Bb gene. Both my parents have brown eyes, except dad's are as dark as mine and my mum's are a more hazel kind. My sister's also have brown eyes (one has same colour as me and the other has hazel)

I know that my mother's father had blue eyes (his wife has light brown) and my father's mother has blue eyes too and her husband had dark brown. This dark brown gene was passed onto most of the grandkids (including me) except for a select few, whose parents (not related to me by blood) had blue. But my youngest cousin's parents both have brown eyes and she got blue. Her mother is my father's sister and she has the same eyes as me.My cousins father is not related to me but he has hazel eyes and was adopted. My cousin could have gotten her eyes from my nan,but it's impossible to know as her father was adopted...

Do I carry a gene for a colour other than brown?

Any science experts on here? lol. sorry for the CONFUSING LONG questio

  1. First of all, this is a genetics question, not genealogy.  You are in the genealogy forum.  They are not the same thing and are not related.  Genetics is a SCIENCE.  Genealogy is a HISTORICAL record of who your ancestors were and their place in history.  Not understanding that crucial difference is the first part of your confusion.

Second, what your cousin's parents have is of no relation or consequence to what you have.

IF your mother has brown eyes but you know that her father has blue, then your MOTHER is Bb.  IF your father's mother had blue eyes, but he has brown, then he is also Bb.  However, there is NO way to know, without genetic testing, to see if you are BB or Bb.  Your ONLY other option to know what YOU are is to marry someone with blue eyes, have a bunch of kids and see if ANY of them have blue eyes.  If any do, then you know you are Bb.  If none do, then that still does not tell you if you are BB or Bb.

  2. i don't have a clue but i do love lively expressive eyes

  3. Short answer: Definitely possible, but you can't tell just by looking at your family members.

Long answer: You probably learned the Punnett square thing in biology class ("a BB parent and a Bb parent can have these possible combinations in their offspring...").  Problem is,  there are actually at least 3 different genes that are involved in eye color so you can't use Punnett squares to figure out this kind of thing.  Scientists still haven't completely figured out these genes work together to produce different eye colors.  Sorry if that doesn't help.
