  1. I've had great success mail-ordering my eyeglasses from a shop in Taiwan.  I won't name it specifically because of Yahoo spam guidelines, but they do business on eBay and you can probably find them pretty easily by doing an internet search.

I'm sure there are also other competing online optical shops too.  This one just happened to be in the ROC.

Typical costs for having glasses made overseas and shipped to the US is about $100.

  2. Yes. It has now become state law in many states that they MUST release your prescription to you at no charge. Any reputable place should have released it anyway. You BUY the exam the rx is yours. You can then take it anywhere you like. Shop around to find the best prices and get specific quotes so you can compare apples for apples. For example, $60 for a stripped down cheapy plastic lens isn't as great a $74 polycarb with all the coatings! Good luck!

  3. yes. just ask him for a prescription card with your prescription on it. you can go anywhere.

  4. Yes, you can ask for your prescription and go to any optical store you wish.

Look under " optician " in your yellow pages, you will probably have many to choose from and shop around at, if you are in a fair sized town.
