Question:

Eye floater for a year?

Last year my contact irritated my eye while I was at an event. I went to the doctor and he said it was badly scratched. I had an eye patch and then put drops in my eye. A week or so later I developed a floater in my eye. After a few months of this I went to the doctor again. He dilated my eyes, looked it, and said everything looked fine and that floaters were normal. He said it should go away time... but it has been almost a year and it hasn't. What could it be and what should I do?

  1. I've had floaters for 20 years or more. I don't think they ever go away. Just name them and live with them.

  2. Eye floaters are normal and won't hurt you.  However if it is so bothersome that it interferes with your vision, there are things the doctor can do.  If this is the case, see your doctor again.

  3. Floaters are physical changes in the vitreous, the normally clear, soft-jello-like, fluid that fills most of the eye's interior. They form normally as we age, the myopic tend to get them at an earlier age. There's nowhere for them to go except that with time the vitreous becomes more fluid and they can move out of your sight.

Usually, tho, you just get used to them.

WARNING: Occasionally the appearance of a floater, especially with light flashes, means there's been a torn retina with the danger of a retinal detachment. If vision becomes distorted

or significantly impaired or vision is lost in any part of your peripheral visual field that is an emergency. Lose no time in contacting an Ophthalmologist or get to the nearest ER. If a detachment is not surgically repaired quickly, you risk permanent loss of sight.
