Eye of the Leopard makes his first start of the year in Durham Cup Stakes at Woodbine
Canada’s Champion 3-year-old male, Eye of the Leopard’s last start was in the Durham Cup, and now his first start of the 2011 season is also in the Grade 3 $150,000 Durham Cup Stakes at Woodbine on 2 October, 2011.
Trained by Mike Frostad for Sam-Son Farm, the 5-year-old horse, Eye of the Leopard rolled in 6th the last time he participated in the Durham Cup Stakes, and will be looking to improve on that.
It will be not easy for 2009 Queen’s Plate Stakes winner, as he will take on fellow stakes winning veterans James Street, Don Cavallo, Stately Victory and City Wolf in the Woodbine special, which attracted a field of five runners and it is for 3-year-olds
and above.
The Canadian bred is the son of A.P. Indy, out of Eye of the Sphynx by Smart Strike, made four starts in the 2010 season, and he could only manage a single win out of those 4 starts.
Winning an allowance claimer back in September 2010, run over a distance of 1 1/16 miles over Woodbine’s synthetic Poly Track.
After the allowance claimer, he made his second start at Woodbine in the Durham Cup Stakes, at about 1 1/8 miles on 3 October, 2010 as he rolled in a distant sixth, as his second score of sixth position of the year, previously coming in the Kelly’s Landing
Stakes at Churchill Downs.
The 5-year-old veteran enters the Durham Cup Stakes, with the six furlong workout, which he covered in 1 minute and 14 3/5 seconds on 23 September. His last work was one of four in the month of September
Jockey E Da Silva will be aboard Eye of the Leopard after a year in the same race, and he will continue where he left from as rides the gelding in his 13th start for trainer Mike Frostad.
The sole entrant in the Pilgrim Stakes coming off a stakes win is the son of El Prado, James Street, as he downed his opponents in the Grade 3 Seagram Cup Stakes under jockey Patrick Husbands last month.
