Question:

Eye prescriptions, is there a scale?

I am trying to work out how bad my eyes really are, because I know that I cannot get contact lenses or laser surgery. Is there a scale with limits for the different parts to your prescription, and what do they mean for me who has the follwing (I know it is really bad):

Right: Sph +8.50 Cyl -350 Axis 155

Left: Sph +10.00 Cyl -400 Axis 10

Surprisingly with this bad prescription I can still see without my glasses quite well, I even forget I am not wearing glasses (just can't read too well or see long distances).

  1. I am assuming you are a young person if you can still see quite well without your glasses.  There really is no scale at this point for you.  When someone is far-sighted, such as yourself, and he/she is young,  he/she can focus the eye to see more clearly (called accommodation).  The older you get, the less able you are to do this.  Therefore, the scale is a dynamic one, meaning it changes from person to person with respect to his/her ability to accommodate.  The story is completely different for near-sighted people.  Their scale is a little easier to predict, but becomes less reliable at higher prescriptions.

  2. Erm not really sure what you are asking, post more details or something?
