Question:

Eyebrow piercing on a teacher?

I was hoping to get my eyebrow pierced, but I'm hesitant because I'm in an education program at university to become a teacher. I'm worried that if I get it done, they might get me to take it out for my placement. I'm also worried that I won't be able to have a job as a teacher once I graduate with a facial piercing. If it helps, I'd be working for the Ontario School Board in Canada.

Thanks!

  1. I probably wouldn't do it.  I know teachers with multiple ear piercings and nose piercings (with small, discrete studs) and belly piercings (which are never seen at school, since you can't really wear a belly top!), but nothing more than that.  You could ask one of your course directors for confirmation, but I'd say that it might hurt your chances.

Then again, it's not like you can't take it out if you find out that it is hurting your chances.  You just have to be prepared to do that.

For what it's worth, the job market in Ontario right now is pretty dismal, so I wouldn't do anything that would put you in a negative light compared to other candidates.  It would stink to have an interview and then find out that the deciding factor was that the principal would rather have someone without facial piercings!

  2. Although there is nothing wrong with a piercing, you might have a harder chance of getting hired.  Many administrators only have a short time to decide if you or the other 20 applicants are the best person for the job, and a piercing might be the tiny thing they overlook you for.  If you are undecided, it is best to wait until they hire you and get to know you better.

  3. It usually depends on the dress code for students. Administrators expect teachers to set a positive example, which includes following the set dress code.

  4. Depends on the reputation you set on yourself. If you act like a nice teacher and flawless, then they'll think your going through a crisis or something. But if you show yourself to be a good-natured teacher who knows how to get the job done, shouldn't be a problem.

  5. Did and do any of your teachers/ professors have their's pierced? Probably not. If the job requires you to have it, then it's okay.  If it doesn't, then it's most likely a no.

  6. Don't do it. It looks tacky.
