Eyes on the prize: Donald tees it up at the RBC Heritage
Luke Donald tees up for the PGA Tours’ RBC Heritage, hoping to change his last year’s runner-up position, by winning the tournament.
"Now that I've been No. 1 for a number of weeks now, it's not something I think about too much. My focus this week is just trying to win the tournament," Donald said.
The 34-year-old English professional golf player finished on the second position last year. He faced a defeat in the playoff mode from Brandt Snedeker.
He scored 12-under 272 in 2011, and competed well for the title. However, Snedeker made an early birdie on the second playoff hole and achieved the glory.
Now Donald is back on the Harbour Town Golf Links in Hilton Head, South Carolina.
The first round is over and the Englishman has shown a mediocre performance throughout the day.
He teed off the event on Thursday, April 12, was unable to score well and faced many hurdles as well. He started the round with a bogey on the first hole and then made his first birdie on the second hole.
This was the only impressive birdie made by him till day-end. From the third hole to the fifth, he scored at-par and was static while scoring.
Then he carded a double bogey on the sixth hole and dropped to a low leaderboard ranking position. After making five consecutive pars, the current world number 1 scored one more bogey on the twelfth hole and another on the fifteenth.
Donald ended the round by making three pars and was unable to fulfil his desires of scoring well. He finished tied for the 103rd position at day-end by scoring 4-over 75.
"I didn't hit the ball particularly well with my irons the first couple of rounds," Donald said. "I didn't hole as many putts as I would have liked, three or four three-putts during the week".
"Some positives, though," he added. "I hit a lot of fairways last week, 80 percent of fairways, which is a good stat for me".
Last week, he finished the Masters on the 32nd position and was also unimpressive at Augusta. Similarly, he is facing tough challenges this week on the PGA Tour events as well.
If he wants to fulfil his winning desires, then he has to deliver his 2011 performance. In 2011, he was the only player who achieved several awards and also finished many tournaments on the top.
