  1. the F16 was designed as a lightweight multi role fighter to be a cost effective alternative to the F15. the F16 was the first fighter to be computer limited to 9g turns.

the F22 is the replacement for the F15 as an air supremacy fighter.

if i were to be forced to make a choice between the two, i would pick the F22 as it has longer range, has super cruise capability, and stealth characteristics.

  2. The F-22, to my knowledge, was not built to replace the F-16, but the F-15.

What exactly do you mean by the question?  The F-22 is faster, stealthier, and more maneuverable than the F-16.  The F-16 is more versatile though, being able to target ground vehicles or aircraft.  It is a multi-role craft.  The F-22 was designed as an air-superiority fighter, so it is best at shooting down aircraft.

  3. if i was among aviation buffs, I would just say the F-22 is dual engined and the F-16 is single engined. I would walk away afterward. Apparently, you guys aren't so brace yourselves.

    F-22 is 5th gen, F-16 is 4th gen.

F-22 has stealth and internal weapons bay as to not trash all its stealth characteristics when carrying weapons.

F-22 has two engines. History has showed countless times a dual engined aircraft taking a missile down one engine and coming back on the other

F-22 has more thrust to weight ratio. Much more available power in turns and climbs.

F-22 has supercruise capability, Which means disengagement from a fight any time and get home.

F-22 can carry every sort of weapon in the NATO ad US inventory. The F-16 is too small to carry certain JDAMs and other larger standoff weapons

F-16 was designed to be a cheap, lightweight multirole, highly adaptable airplane for air-to-air, air-to-surface and air-to-ground fighter. It's light, and it's like a filler aircraft. It's like an extra all around airplane that will support the offensive but will not be the sharpest point of it.

F-22 is much more single mission oriented. All aspects of it is perfect or air-to-air. For air-to-ground, it is also good but its price kind of makes the down and dirty dueling with tanks a no-no.

F-16 has been sold to many many nations, Israel., Turkey, Japan, and nearly every NATO nation.

F-22 will likely stay with Uncle Sam for a long long time if not forever.

    my closing statement is:

F-22 has brute force and good payload. While the F-16 is more graceful....with a sting.

of course, I would wait and see how the f-22 performs in combat. I hope it does end up with a better record than the F-15 it was meant to replace.  The F-15 being my fav combat aircraft, I would really be pissed if the F-22 sucked.

  4. the f-16 is thte air superiority bird.  in the last 15 years the f-15 had been reduced to the role of a fighter bomber b/c it's not maneuverable enough.  the f-22 is supposed to take the superior range, speed and payload of the f-15, combine it with the athleticism of the f-16 and add stealth capabilities... it'll toast either one.

  5. The F16 was developed as a low cost supplement to the F15. And the F22 is intended to replace the F15. So if the F16 is less capable than the F15 it is certainly less capable than the F22.

The F22 is considered the best air dominance aircraft in the world right now. The upcoming F35 is intended to fill the role that the F16 filled before. It's a bit less capable, but also cheaper, allowing greater numbers.

The hype about the F16 was because it was a very capable aircraft for its cost. It is fast, nimble and is multi-role capable. It has been widely used internationally because it was the best bang for the buck around.

  6. f-22  faster newer better

  7. You can't really compare the two.  The F-16 is a 4th generation multi-role fighter.  The F-22 is a 5th generation single role fighter.

The F-16 was designed as a small medium range interdiction type aircraft that could fight its way into and out of hostile airspace.  Along the way, it has picked up many other roles and missions.  It's a jack of all trades, but master of none.  That being said, it's probably the one aircraft every combatant commander wants a lot of because it can easily switch from bombing targets to air to air to forward air control, etc.

The F-22 is designed to be the replacement for the F-15.  It has one role (right now) - kill the enemy aircraft.  It has stealth technology and vectored thrust to make it harder to see on radar and more maneuverable in a fight.  Obviously, the jury is still out on its combat prowess as it has not yet (to my knowledge) seen combat.  Some even argue it's necessity since the F-15 hasn't seen air to air combat in a very long time because of it's outstanding capabilities.

  8. The F-16 was a great aircraft with a Looong history,AHH,theres the rub.The -22 is its replacement with several innovations that the F16 cannot be fitted for . Besides we have sold so many F-16s to fickle nations that may not stay friendly.
