  1. some can some can't. it depends on the branch. Marines can take off vert. but af, and navy can't

  2. There are three versions of the F-35.  One for the Air Force, another with beefed up landing gear for the NAVY needed for carrier landing, and a third for the Marines with VTOL capabilities.  Unlike the Harrier it uses the thrust of the engine plus a separate lift fan only engaged during short roll or vertical take offs and landing.

    .

  3. The purpose of the F-35  is to have an aircraft to do it all.  It doesn't make sense remove such an important feature and have different models. The the entire "joint stike fighter" concept would become a nul argument.

Currently this is all just speculation any way.  The whole thing is under development.  Nothing is set in stone yet.

  4. Ezz17 is right. England's Royal Navy will also use the F-35B.

  5. No only the Marine Version, the F-35 B can

The F-35A (Air Force) and F-35C (Navy) are unable to do so.
