F1 CEO Bernie Ecclestone mugged – A page from a Sherlock tale or food for thought for the conspiracy theorist?
The Formula One season came to a close this month in dramatic fashion. Formula One, a sport often criticized for being too dry and predictable, gave the media a completely different angle to work with owing to the events that unfolded
in the 2010 season – A total of 3 constructors featuring 5 drivers had a shot at the title in the latter stages of the season.
However, if that wasn’t enough, Mr Bernie Ecclestone literally chose to take matters into his own hands as he left all 24 drivers at his disposal behind and found himself making the news; ‘being’ the news, to be precise.
“Formula One boss Bernie Ecclestone suffered a head injury when muggers attacked him and escaped with jewellery worth £200,000.”
That is what the news reported; and accordingly, the 80-year-old F1 supremo sported a bruised eye as he came to office the following day. However, the CEO quickly rubbished such claims that such worth of jewellery
was stolen at all.
He proposed, “They took our watches and a few other bits and pieces, but I never carry much money or expensive jewellery. Most of Fabiana’s stuff was just personal from Brazil and not worth much. They won’t
be going far on what they took off us.”
However, interestingly, the robbers, according to the word of the CEO himself, did not stay around to chat. They went for ‘brutal’ force to strip the couple of their valuables and went away without another
word. Now, the most obvious observation that would strike any reasonable 3rd person would be that Bernie Ecclestone is a big name in the world of the rich and the famous. The description of the attack points to the couple simply being at the wrong
place at the wrong time; meaning that it could have been anyone. The coincidence that it happened to be a CEO of a rather documented and camera-covered sport seems rather peculiar… Call me Sherlock, but things seem a touch dodgy.
With all that said, like most write-ups, this article also comes with another side. There was the detective-side, now come the claims of a conspiracy theorist:
What it could it be? How much jewellery could ‘poor’ Mr. Formula One wear? Could it be yet another elaborate scheme to make the news, Mr Ernie? Or were you simply bored with an event-less life after the end
of the season? Or was it, a mastermind plan that was aimed at his girlfriend – remember, reports suggested ‘jewellery’ was stolen – Could it be the perfect cover up; robbing an innocent woman knowing that the attention would go straight towards the CEO of
the multi-billion dollar sport?!
Catching up with reality, thankfully for Mr Ecclestone’s well-wishers - if there ‘truly’ are any left in every sense of the word, along with a more sizeable chunk of potential human rights activists who just wouldn’t stand for
an old, aged man brutally beaten and robbed - there were no reports of any other injuries.
There would also be a school of thought that might go as far to suggest that at the ripe old age of 80, its perhaps time that Mr. Formula One starts acting his age. While it might make interesting readings on the morning newspaper,
the old man should instead be wrapped around in layers of blankets and ideally be enjoying a good bedtime story with his grandchildren.
However, we all know that Formula One without Bernie Ecclestone would be a lot like a Manchester United without Sir Alex Ferguson – While it would be sensible to presume that their absence would alter the face of the respective
businesses, it is still up for debate whether the change would be mere difference or further evolution…
