F1 Team Williams Technical Director Sam Michael resigns
Sam Michael, the technical director of Team Williams, has recently revealed that he will resign from his post after the end of the 2011 Formula 1 season.
Other than that, it has been revealed that the team’s Chief aerodynamicist, Jon Tomlinson, is also going to quit. Mike Coughlan, who used to work for McLaren previously, is going to join the team as its chief engineer in June. He had to leave the team after
the 2007 “Spygate” scandal and was banned from the sport for two years as a result.
The team witnessed the worst season start in its history this year and according to Michael, the team is hoping to improve its car vitally in order to score better results at the upcoming races.
Michael stated before that he is considering his own position after the team’s worst start to a season this year and it seems that he has “had it” now.
“Both Sam and Jon are talented and driven people who have worked hard for Williams over 10 and five years respectively. Nonetheless, they have recognised that the team's performance is not at the level that it needs to be and have resigned in order to give
the team the opportunity to regroup and undertake the changes necessary to get back to the front of the grid”, according to a statement by Williams.
Since Coughlan has a “bad reputation” in the sport due to the “Spygate” scandal, the team’s boss Frank Williams is hoping to change that soon.
“Mike Coughlan is a fine engineer with extensive experience across Formula One and both civil and defence engineering. He left Formula One in 2007 because of conduct which he acknowledges was wrong and which he profoundly regrets”, he said.
However, the statement added that both Sam and Jon are going to work in their current positions until the end of the 2011 Formula 1 season and that the team is grateful to both of them for their professional work at the team.
