F1 drivers pay tribute to Professor Sid Watkins – Formula 1 news
F1 drivers have paid tribute to the former FIA medical head, Professor Sid Watkins who passed away after his long battle with cancer at the age of 84.
Watkins had always been praised for his remarkable contributions to the drivers’ safety on race tracks. He joined the sport back in 1978 on the request of Bernie Ecclestone, the chief executive officer of F1 and was retired in 2004. Although, he stepped
down from his designation, nonetheless, he kept on providing his creditable inputs so as to improve the safety standards.
It will be important to mention that he was admired by every driver in the game and enjoyed a very good affiliation with everyone. He had a special connection with Ayrton Senna who is arguably the best driver in the history of F1.
Many drivers have expressed their humble remarks about the safety pioneer which include Mario Andretti, Rubens Barrichello, Jenson Button, David Coulthard, Lewis Hamilton, Narain Karthikeyan, Heikki Kovalainen, Nico Rosberg, Bruno Senna and the list goes
on.
Mario Andretti said, “Just landed in Calif to the news of Prof Sid Watkins passing. Every driver will remember the contribution he made to the safety of our sport”.
Jenson Button tweeted, “Rest in Peace Sid Watkins...motorsport wouldn't be what it is today without u. Thank you for all you've done, we as drivers are so grateful. 'Only a life lived for others is a life worthwhile.' Albert Einstein. RIP Professor Sid Watkins.”
Rubens Barrichello said, “It was Sid Watkins that saved my life in Imola 94. Great guy to be with, always happy. Thanks for everything you have done for us drivers. RIP”
Besides, it will be interesting to note that McLaren chairman and former team boss, Ron Dennis said that even though Watkins was not a driver or engineer or designer but he was a doctor who did more than anyone for making F1 safe as it is now.
Prof. Sid was truly a legend and his relentless efforts for the safety of the racing drivers are justly commendable. Though, he has passed away but his legacy will last forever.
