I am a student and resident of Canada, and was wondering if i could use a F1 optional practical training visa to work in the US for a year once I graduate in April.

Any information you have regarding this would be greatly appreciated.

  1. I take it you are living in Canada, but not a Canadian citizen.  You are certainly welcome to apply, but it must first be as an F-1 student in the US:

You must have been in full time student status for at least one full academic year preceding the submission of your OPT application; be maintaining valid F-1 status at the time of the application; and intend to work in a position directly related to your major field of study.

You will need to find a cooperating institution in the US to provide the I-20.

  2. No, there is a different visa for that.
